Discover Nerja

The most important tourist city on the eastern Costa del Sol.

Quiet and cosmopolitan city, Nerja has a large number of pedestrian streets where you can stroll and shop. A visit to the Balcony of Europe is unavoidable, a beautiful viewpoint over the Mediterranean. In addition to its natural beauty, Nerja has a true archaeological gem: the Nerja Caves, known as the "natural cathedral of the Costa del Sol", located 750 metres from the coastline and about 200 metres above sea level. The publicly accessible chamber has an area of approximately 140,000 square metres, with a maximum length of 700 metres. However, the most striking feature is the large column situated in the Hall of Cataclysm, which is 60 metres high and 18 metres in diameter, formed by the fusion of stalactites and stalagmites. A natural spectacle not to be missed while visiting Nerja.

The Nerja Caves are not only famous for their archaeological sites and rock formations but also for their International Music and Dance Festival, which takes place every year in July, a festival of great quality set in a beautiful environment.

Nerja Caves

Nerja Caves

The Nerja Caves are one of the most fascinating natural and cultural enclaves on the Costa del Sol. Discovered in 1959, they stretch for nearly 5 kilometres of underground galleries that house spectacular formations of stalactites and stalagmites, as well as cave paintings over 40,000 years old, considered among the oldest known in Europe. Known as the “Natural Cathedral of the Costa del Sol”, it offers an astonishing journey through its grand halls, such as the Hall of Cataclysm or the Hall of Bethlehem. Just a few minutes from the centre of Nerja, it is a must-visit for lovers of history, nature, and the unique beauty hidden within the earth.

Natural Park of Sierras de Tejada, Almijara and Alhama

Natural Park of Sierras de Tejada, Almijara and Alhama

The Tejeda, Almijara, and Alhama mountains form a spectacular natural environment between Málaga and Granada, characterised by marble crests, pine forests, and fauna such as the Spanish ibex and large birds of prey. The peak of Tejeda stands out, offering views of the Mediterranean, and it is the southernmost tejeda in the Peninsula. Rivers and streams create unique waterfalls and gorges, such as the Cahorros or the Nerja cave. The area reflects a strong Muslim heritage in white villages and Moorish architecture, with a rich cuisine based on local products like tropical fruits, wines, and artisanal cheeses.

Natural Park of Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs

Natural Park of Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs

The Natural Area of Maro-Cerro Gordo offers a spectacular environment of cliffs, coves, and hanging agricultural terraces with unique views from the Torre de Maro. Its natural wealth encompasses both land and sea: pine forests, unique plant species such as boxwood, seabirds, seabeds with posidonia, fish, and corals. It also houses archaeological heritage such as the Nerja Caves and Roman remains. Ideal for hiking, diving, or boat trips, this location combines natural beauty, biodiversity, and historical legacy.

Hiking

Hiking

Nerja, situated to the east of the Costa del Sol, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Sierras of Almijara, Tejeda, and Alhama, is a perfect spot for hiking. One of its most emblematic routes is the demanding ascent to Pico del Cielo, which reaches an altitude of 1,508 metres just six kilometres from the sea. The route, with a height gain of 1,200 metres over just 7 km, traverses landscapes ranging from pine forests to mountain scrub, offering spectacular views towards Granada, the Axarquía, the sea, and, on clear days, even Africa. The summit rewards the effort with an exceptional panoramic view of the entire range.
